How to Start an Application for our Music Production Course

So you’re ready to kick start your career as a music producer and join us at Abbey Road Institute Sydney! Applying is simple and takes 5 minutes once you have all the documentation ready. To help make that journey even easier, we’ve put together this guide on starting (and finishing) an application to study with us. Along the way, you’ll read some tips from our Student Administrator Jordan Stewart who’s here to answer any questions you may have about the process.

First Things First

Before you start your application, it’s important to know the entry requirements and the application documents that you will need to complete your submission.

To be eligible to study at Abbey Road Institute Sydney, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be an Australian resident
  • Have completed year 12 (or equivalent), or hold a qualification at Certificate IV or above

If you meet these requirements, you can then start putting together the following documents for your application:

  • Your music portfolio – 4 productions in which you demonstrate different roles (performer, producer, engineer, writer, etc). Please label the portfolio or submit further documentation to explain your role in each production. The tracks must be submitted in MP3 format in order to be accepted.

Jordan’s Tip: We know that everyone’s at a different stage in their musical journey, and that’s ok; this portfolio is our way of understanding where you are in yours. As such, your submissions can be anything from a voice memo to a mastered track on streaming platforms, and we will consider everything from the potential in your songwriting and production to your mixing and mastering skills.

  • Academic qualifications – your highest/most recent qualifications
  • Cover letter – similar to a statement of intent, explain your motivation to study, career goals and provide further explanation of your background in a short, one-page cover letter. Here you can also demonstrate your musical abilities such as your performance history, theory qualifications or any other music experience you have.
  • Your up-to-date CV – allowances will be made for applicants with minimal “real-world” experience.

Jordan’s Tip: If you’re concerned about what to put into your CV because you haven’t had heaps of experiences (yet), just remember we’re only viewing this to gain a more holistic understanding of who you are and where you’re at. If you’ve recently finished high school, consider sharing academic or extracurricular highlights from your high school experience.

Start the application

Once you have these documents ready, applying is easy and can be done directly from our website. On your computer, you will find the ‘Apply Now’ button in the top right corner of your screen (we recommend applying on your laptop or desktop to make uploading your materials easy).

The first two steps are for submitting your basic information. First, select Sydney as the location you wish to study then select our CUA60520 Advanced Diploma of Music as the course you wish to enrol in. Then, scroll down and fill out your full name, email, phone number, address and nationality.

Once that’s done, you’ll be able to upload all the required documents listed above before submitting your application!

What Happens Next

You will receive an email from us if you meet the entry requirements and an interview will be scheduled with two members of our team. This can be a virtual interview or in-person where you’ll get to see our state-of-the-art facilities at Studios 301.

The interview typically runs from 45 minutes to an hour and is hosted by two members of our admission team. The interview consists of a series of questions designed to help us learn more about your experiences and goals. This is the last step in the admission process, once the interview is completed an admission decision will be made.

Jordan’s Tip: You won’t need to bring anything with you to the interview, but remember that our interview is just as much about us as it is about you. So bring any questions you have from ‘day-to-day student experience’ to ‘career opportunities.’

Once the interview is complete, you will receive an email or call regarding the outcome. If successful, you will receive a letter of offer inviting you to study with us. When accepting the offer, you will be required to deposit a $500 registration fee to confirm your enrolment.

And that’s it! You’re ready to launch your career at Abbey Road Institute Sydney!
