Hi, my name is Isabella Loong. I’m a Sydney based music producer, sound engineer and composer. I have a musical background in classical violin and sonic arts. So my creative practice experiments with traditional and innovative sound technologies and techniques. I’m here today as a student in Studio 7 at Abbey Road Institute Sydney and you can check out my musical works thus far at @sydneyandstreet.

How would you describe your musical style?

My main musical style is a combination of classical and electronic music. But I definitely want to expand my engineering experience across a variety of styles.

Who are your musical inspirations?

I have many musical inspirations, but my main influences for production include Sylvia Massy, Suzanne Ciani, Linda Perry, Kate Bush, Björk, Madonna and Kylie Minogue.

Who would your dream collaboration be with?

So my dream collaboration would be to assist Sylvia Massy who is a pioneering female recording engineer, mixer and masterer. She has definitely pushed the boundaries in terms of experimenting with recording techniques particularly for Tool, Johnny Cash, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Prince.

What inspired you to study at Abbey Road Institute?

Definitely the world renowned institution name linked to Abbey Road Studios, but also being in Sydney it’s just a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with Studios 301 and get involved into the community here.

Which studio do you find yourself in the most?

Definitely enjoying the studio time in Studio 7 here and just all of our lessons and masterclasses at 301 and yeah, just trying to get as much experience in the studio as possible, but also enjoy using the facilities on campus.

Which studio is your favourite?

Oh, Studio 1 for sure. It’s just iconic. The dream.

What would you like to achieve at the end of the course?

My goal is not only to upskill my training and specialisation in music production, but also to kick start my career as a music producer and sound engineer, particularly through the professional networking, mentorships and collaboration with other students and that community here in Studios 301.

What advice would you give to new and current students?

My advice would be just to talk to as many people, get as much feedback as possible from all the tutors and team here at the studios. And definitely get involved in collaborations with other students to expand your creative practices and learn and inspire from other people. Make sure you’re putting in enough hours to use the fantastic facilities that are available.
